How can I charge at home?

The standard charging cable (Mode 2) is included when you buy an electrified BMW – so if need be you can charge your vehicle with any standard household socket. However to get the most out of your new BMW BEV or PHEV we recommend installing a hardwired BMW wallbox this makes life safe quick and convenient when charging your car.

BMW WALLBOX.

The BMW Wallbox features a maximum power of up to 22 kW 3 phase and 7.4 kW on single phase (most households in NZ), a minimalist and weatherproof design, integrated cable storage, and Bluetooth connectivity. And user identification is possible with the My BMW app.

What do I need to consider before selecting a home charging solution?

We recommend you contact your BMW dealer to request one of their partner electricians carry out an electrical suitability inspection of your home. This will check you have enough power available to run a 32 amp BMW wallbox (7.4 KW) at your house (60 Amps to the house is generally standard in NZ).

They will also check the condition of your wiring and fuse box and advise on the best place to install your wallbox.

Can I drive an electric vehicle if I have no charging option at home?

Of course: simply use the constantly growing public charging network from BMW Charging or, depending on your local options, other charging stations like at work. The My BMW app or the navigation system in your vehicle will show you public charging points nearby. You can also find a geographical overview of the public charging infrastructure for New Zealand at https://chargenow.co.nz. With your new BMW, in addition to the exclusively attractive prices, the basic fee is waived in certain tariffs and packages with BMW Charging.

Where can I charge while travelling?

Almost everywhere! With BMW Charging, we offer a constantly growing and multi-regional network of public charging points, including high-power charging stations from various providers. For detailed information on the availability of your area’s public charging infrastructure or other relevant locations, visit https://chargenow.co.nz or simply display public charging points through BMW Maps in your vehicle's navigation system or the My BMW app. The charging cable (Mode 3) for public charging and the BMW Charging Card* are included with your new electric vehicle. As a BMW driver, you also receive exclusive and attractive conditions and benefits in the BMW Charging Network. Simply register at https://chargenow.co.nz.

How can I find suitable charging option when on the go?

You can use the app or BMW Maps in your vehicle's navigation system. You can add a filter to find charging points for alternating current (AC), direct current (DC), and high-power charging (HPC). Or you can choose to only display public charging points with a verified quality and availability status ("Preferred"). The vehicle's navigation system will then display a suitable charging station. You can do the same with the My BMW app. Either way, the charging points are clearly identified and with extended functionalities, such as points of interest, status, and additional information on each charging station.

How do I get access to public charging?

You get immediate access to the world of BMW Charging when you buy a BMW electric vehicle – with your personal BMW Charging Card that includes exclusive and attractive conditions for the BMW Charging network. All you have to do is log in with your BMW ID at https://chargenow.co.nz, sign up for the Active tariff with your new BMW (available for the first year with no basic fee), and activate your BMW Charging Card. In less than 24 hours, you will be activated for the extensive public charging network – so can start charging! You will receive an overview of every charge as part of the monthly invoice. You can choose to receive your invoice through the online portal, by e-mail, or by post.

With the latest generation of BMW electric vehicles, such as the BMW iX3, BMW iX, and BMW i4, you automatically receive the ChargeNow card and can therefore charge at attractive conditions at ChargeNow charging stations in New Zealand.

How can I check the charging status?

Easy. Use the My BMW app* in your smartphone or in the car to see the current status and the available range of your electric vehicle.

What are the optimal battery charging levels for my BMW electric car?

It’s best to maintain a charge of between 10 and 80 per cent. Lower or higher levels are possible, but to optimise the life of your battery, it is recommended to stay between 10 and 80 per cent. In your vehicle’s menu, you can easily and conveniently set your target charge to 80 per cent, so you’ll never have to worry about it.
A target charge of 80 per cent should cover all your daily driving needs. If you actually need more, simply set a higher target.

What should I look out for when charging my BMW plug-in hybrid?

As its name suggests, a plug-in hybrid can be charged from a socket, a Wallbox or at a public charging station. The maximum efficiency of a plug-in hybrid is achieved with a fully charged battery; which means that a charging facility should be available at home and at the workplace. Charge your BMW plug-in hybrid as often as possible so that you can always make full use of the additional electric drive.

What should take into consideration when charging from a standard household socket?

It is prohibited to use an extension cable and multi-plug connectors. A charging rate of 1.3 kW at 6 A is set as the default. You can either switch this current limitation off entirely in the vehicle settings menu or set the AC charging current to the precise amperage according to your electrical installation.

BMW Group does however recommend the installation of a wallbox at your primary charging location for fast and safe everyday charging.

Who will install my Wallbox at my home?

You can quite simply book our installation service by contacting your BMW Group dealer along with your Wallbox purchase. This guarantees that your Wallbox is installed and set up safely and professionally.

What is the difference between charging with alternating current (AC), direct current (DC) and a high power charging point (HPC)?

will vary. For electric vehicles, charging takes longer with alternating current (AC) – depending on the cable and charging point – and direct current (DC)* is significantly faster. Ultra-fast charging via direct current (DC)* is possible at High Power Charging (HPC)* charging stations, which are offered by our partner ChargeNet in New Zealand. The battery of a BMW iX, for example, can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in less than 40 minutes with a maximum power of 200 kW. The maximum power output at a charging point depends on the local infrastructure.

Please note: when charging DC and HPC, you should hold the charging plug on the vehicle until the plug is locked. This ensures that the charging process starts without a problem.

* Currently only relevant for BMW fully electric vehicles (BEV).

How do I get High Power Charging tariff option?

In New Zealand, BMW Charging includes ChargeNet’s High Power Charging (HPC) network – and you will receive a BMW Charging Card as soon as your vehicle is delivered. All you need to do is register for BMW ChargeNow in the portal https://chargenow.co.nz.

Can I also drive longer distances with my BMW electric car?

Yes, no problem. For particularly fast charging, you can use the High-Power Charging (HPC) stations of our partner ChargeNet along the main New Zealand motorways. The My BMW app or the navigation system in the vehicle will show you right where they are. All you need to do is set a search filter. With a BMW iX, for example, you can charge up for over 120 kilometres of additional reach with a short coffee break of around ten minutes. If you take a longer break at an HPC charging station, you can charge the BMW iX from 10 to 80 per cent in about 40 minutes – whether you can take advantage of the vehicle’s maximum power handling of up to 200 kW depends on the local infrastructure. Access to the ChargeNet network is available through BMW ChargeNow card.

What's the best way to prepare my vehicle for the next trip?

Heating and cooling require energy. For that reason, it makes sense to bring your vehicle to the desired temperature while it’s still plugged in, so you can start your trip with the maximum range. It’s easy to set the departure time and “pre-condition” to the desired climate using the My BMW app or the vehicle menu. That way, you’ll have a full charge and the perfect temperature right when you’re ready to leave – automatically.

This feature is also great for defrosting iced up windows on a cold winter’s day.

What are the differences between a BMW Wallbox and a Smart Partner Wallbox?

The BMW Wallbox ensures fast, safe, and convenient charging at home. The wallbox can be connected to the My BMW app via Bluetooth and managed by the user. For many BMW drivers, the BMW Wallbox is the right solution.

However, there are some drivers who have additional requirements for a home charging solution that offers additional functions, such as remote access to the wallbox or intelligent management of charging processes.

For this purpose, BMW Charging offers you the Smart Partner Wallbox "XXX (model)" from our Premium Partner "YYY (name partner)". This solution is even more deeply networked via SIM card or WiFi, and it can also communicate with external systems. For example, the Smart Partner Wallbox can be integrated into an existing Home Energy Management System (HEMS) so that, for example, self-generated solar power can also be utilised to the fullest. Digital services, e.g. for the exact recording, documentation, and billing of charging processes, are also possible with the Smart Partner Wallbox.

Disclaimer

The values of fuel consumptions, CO2 emissions and energy consumptions shown were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers optional equipment and the different size of wheels and tires available on the selected model.

The CO2 efficiency specifications are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the European Regulation in its current version applicable. The values shown are based on the fuel consumption, CO2 values and energy consumptions according to the NEDC cycle for the classification.

When charging times are shown they can be affected by a number of factors such as type of charger, voltage supplied to the charger/car and type of current (AC or DC) supplied to the charger/car. The car also plays a role in charging times as it can be set by the driver to accept various different amperage and should preconditioning be used to heat or cool the vehicle while charging this will also affect the charging time.

The basis for the calculation of the charging times for 100 km range is the electric consumption of the vehicle based on the use of a high-Powered Charging station (HPC) or charging type and current as indicted in the literature above. The testing procedure measures are based on a 23 degrees Celsius battery start and ambient temperature with certification values excluding additional auxiliary consuming devices and systems within the vehicle such as seat heating, displays, air conditioning.

Individual consumption (fuel economy) may differ due to driving profile, vehicle load profile, auxiliary consumer usage, temperature, and ambient conditions. Consumption is based on WLTP or NEDC (whichever is indicated) best case conditions and is independently tested for BMW Group. If you are comparing this range with other models or brands make sure they are stating the same WLTP or NEDC testing regime. These results can be used to compare vehicles on a close to “like for like” basis but are unlikely to be achieved in real world conditions for reasons including temperature variation, driving conditions and the use of the auxiliary systems referred to above.
